Derbyshire Evening Telegraph pub legend – The Beerhunter – has been promoting boozers in Derbyshire for decades.
I am happy to confirm I will often visit pubs on his recommendation and his column is still the essential read in the local rag.
The word on the street is that whilst he is a man who likes to visit pubs in Derbyshire he can occasionally be found in the watering holes of Aston on Trent.
I say watering holes, there are in fact two, which isn’t bad for a village with a population of around 1,700 people and a football club, Aston On Trent FC, so this might well be one for Duncan https://twitter.com/mackay_duncan to visit in the future.
(British village life)
Arguably Aston’s biggest event is the annual Well Dressing Festival in July, which brings in a lot of extra punters and no doubt the pubs in the village cash in during this period.
The recent sunny spell will have been welcomed too after profits at Marston’s recently took a dip with Beast From The East one of the chief reasons (apparently) so the boys in Burton/Wolverhampton will be pleased to see punters drinking in 221 – The White Hart DE72 2AF on a Sunday afternoon.
(the old fake bookcase routine…)
The village’s second boozer, The Malt, is within spitting distance of this Marston’s pub so it was pot luck as to whether or not I could locate the Beerhunter.
There had been a 50th birthday party the night before which the barmaid described as “messy…”
(Messy, apparently)
…and the fact it was used by locals for a party and it had a specialist corner seat suggests this place is used by locals.
It wasn’t packed by any stretch of the imagination when I rolled up with my youngest after his football game but what it lacked in numbers it more than made up for in warmth.
A really friendly barmaid went above and beyond in feigning interest in Super Mario Bros, which happened to be the game on his Nintendo, and they had a good chat (for quite some while bless her) on the merits of the game.
She was also chatting with locals about how the gaffer was out on a date and the place was happy although it had the feel of a morning/afternoon after the night before a bit as one or two punters looked a little bleary!
Another father and son combo were playing pool and there was also a dart board in there along with a beer patio and it felt like a solid local pub.
(secret garden)
I had a more than decent pint of Saddle Tank (Marston’s) which will be known as Burton Bitter to anyone who was around before the rebrand and it was relaxing – Super Mario conversations aside – to sit in the sun in a quintessentially British village and watch the world slowly meander by.
No sign of the Beerhunter though so he may well have been engaged elsewhere sourcing some excellent articles for me to glean a whole host of info from!
There is still one pub left in Aston on Trent though…so you never know…
“Derbyshire Evening Telegraph pub legend – The Beerhunter”
Good to see someone’s taken up Michael Jackson’s baton (meant in sincerity, not sarcasm). (thumbs up)
“The White Hart”
Reminds me of a collection of short stories by sci-fi writer Arthur C. Clarke (Tales from the White Hart).
“(Messy, apparently)”
I’m guessing it’s the shadows but it looks like he’s wet himself. 🙂
” (for quite some while bless her0 on the merits of the game.”
Makes all the difference. 🙂
“There is still one pub left in Aston on Trent though…so you never know…”
Plus, there’s always next weekend. 🙂
Cheers
PS – “to see putters drinking”
Unless it’s mini golf I think putters should be punters. 🙂
“I had a more than decent pit ”
Methinks you’re still stuck on your mining town post. 😉

Arthur C Clarke – there’s a blast from the past!!! There’s always another weekend my good man and I always live in hope!

Russtovich… very aware of Michael Jackson being the original Beerhunter. It wasn’t a name I chose for the newspaper column at the start; had that pressed upon me reluctantly. Michael, RIP, will always be the Beerhunter.
Beermat… always the Malt for me! Especially quiz nights on Tuesdays (why the White Hart deliberately placed its quiz night on the same night when it could easily have picked another is beyond me…..)

Whooa, whooa, slow down. The Beerhunter? What do you mean The Beerhunter? Are you saying, like Lazarus, the great, late, Michael Jackson is returned and now writing a column in the Derbyshire Evening Telegraph?

Mayhap Colston could be called the Pub Persuer? 😎

Persuer or do you mean peruser? That’s not a rare typo is it Russ? 😉

So I now gather … he will have to be a very good beerhunter to find any in the sea of Wolverhampton & Dudley breweries ale you folk down there seem to favour 😜.

Pfft. I meant pursuing (good) pubs. But yes (blush) bloody typo for sure.
Mind you, peruser works as well. Maybe both together? Triple P then, or the Pub Pursuer Peruser. 🙂

Are you saying the late great Michael Jackson wasn’t just a vocalist in the Jackson 5? He was a beer expert too 😉😉

He lived near me, in Wetherby for a good many years. Apparently he couldn’t hold a tune in a bucket, but he was a pioneer in popular beer writing. I have several of his books but by no means all. many later books by other writers are simply updated versions of his original writing.

I remember him as the Michael Jackson I was interested in but can’t profess to have read any of his works.

Yep. I too have a few of his books. And I love his six-part Beer Hunter TV shows. I’ve managed to download them from YouTube and watch them a few times each year. 🙂

Need that ground! Nice post. Perhaps you and Colston could combine on a visit as great advocates of Derbyshire’s pub scene.

That sounds like a great plan …I will get on the case as I reckon a train trip could be on the cards 👍

Richard, while I note that you were fishing for a bite when you wrote…
“he will have to be a very good beerhunter to find any in the sea of Wolverhampton & Dudley breweries ale you folk down there seem to favour …”
…I then saw that you were in Wetherby! So, quick division of West Yorks’ population against number of breweries shows you to have a brewery for every 26,740 of you.
In Derbyshire, we have a brewery for every 11,667 of us! Get yourself down here for choice! 🙂

P.S. Michael Jackson (not, not that one) was also a whisky expert. I have a book by him documenting every distillery in Britain and every product they produced (at the time), with tasting notes and his personal score out of 100. That’s a lot of drinking at even a sip of each. Dated about 2000 but much of it still relevant.

Not a big liquor fan – my brain tends to turn off before my body does 🙂 – but I knew that about him. Quite the amazing fellow when you think about it. 🙂
Cheers!

He was a connoisseur by all accounts then? That’s a great book
