As promised, the second of Burton’s big hitters although, strictly speaking this boozer is in Stapenhill.
227 – The Elms DE15 9AE is on the Stapenhill Road on the outskirts of Burton. If you think Digbeth as a separate entity to Birmingham then you’ve got some idea of the proximity of Stapenhill to Burton.
I can’t think of another pub in the Midlands with an outside as iconic as this and it would be a huge disappointment if it wasn’t a traditional boozer.
Fear not, as it is a cracker with a small bar and snug either side of it whilst there is some food available in the lounge at the back this is, to all intents and purposes, a cracking locals pub that shows live sport.
My pal and I started our Wednesday walk here that also encompassed the Dog and The Barley Mow and a half of Bass here was the drink of the night.
The snug and bar was nicely full and there are always bar blockers at The Elms but happy to let you see what’s on offer. There were, unusually two groups of people both with laptops who appeared to be undertaking some kind of business chat but the Elms appeals to all and sundry and the beauty of this place is that there is no stereotypical punter.
Bench seating, cask ale, beermats, multi roomed and an entrance that stands out in a town full of iconic boozers.
Not a lot more to add other than it was a good atmosphere and if anyone reading this has never been to The Elms then they are missing out on a real treat.
I’m not sure this post does it justice but undoubtedly one of the best pubs I’ve been into this year and it looks likely to carry on in the same vein for many years to come.
Cheers!
Yes that does it justice! Sometimes the photos say it all. A classic. Smiles at the idea of you pushing to the bar to see what’s on. “Oh look. Bass !”

I’m loving the logo of the famous mirror manufacturer emblazoned all over the front of the pub and the station style edge to the smoking shelter.

Their mirrors and clocks are top notch 😀

Yes, their mirrors are everywhere. I reckon there will be a lot of fakes around, there can’t have been that many Bass mirrors made. A bit like their beer these days?

Beer is still good when drunk in a pub with good turnover…like all cask it can vary but still a good pint when on form…I drink all types of beer but do like this particular pint 👍🔺

“…pibt”.
Is that a typographical error please, or a new kind of beer with which I am not yet acquainted ?

Or just use Google maps like I did. 🙂
“with an outside as iconic as this ”
Definitely looks good in Streetview.
“a cracking locals pub that shows live sport.”
In the photo right below, is that someone’s walking sticking hanging on the glass?
“but undoubtedly one of the best pubs I’ve been into this year”
I think the classics are like that; simply so good in a way that’s there nowt more to say about them. 🙂
Cheers
PS – “snug either side of it whilst there is some food available”
Minor nit but I think it would scan better with ‘and’ before ‘whilst’.

Google maps is clearly a better option! I’m stuck in the eighties 👍

That is one fantastic looking pub, just a shame it is so far from the canal!

I agree with other comments – definitely does it justice – what a fantastic pub. You are lucky your area has so many fantastic trad pubs and all that cask Bass.
I notice the valance on that lean to is very similar to the style seen on old railway station platform canopies, and also really great to see the tradition of brick wall painting for the pub name, bass triangle etc…👍
