If Carlsberg did pubs…so the biggest con best bit of marketing ever for beer might just have said…
If, just if, Carlsberg decided they were going to produce some top notch beer and buy a pub then they might just start selling at 265 – The Globe DE12 7DB.
Not only is this boozer officially in the centre of the UK in the village of Snarestone (https://www.shortlist.com/news/where-does-the-north-start/332995) therefore ensuring location is central, but there are plenty of other positives as well.
I strolled in at around 5pm on a Tuesday and was met with an array of good beer, a cheery, chatty barmaid and easily the best pint of Bass I’ve had in months. Absolute nectar.
However, I’m clearly not the only one who recognised this. Following a convivial chat with the barmaid, she revealed that The Globe has an unofficial “Tuesday Bass club” whereby a group of blokes come in and have an afternoon on the Bass… she confirmed that I had arrived at arguably the prime time of the week for a good pint of Bass.
She clearly knew her stuff as she admitted that Bass and Pedigree (Marston’s) need a regular turnover to be consistent and she suggested I join the Bass club on future Tuesdays afternoons!
I reckon I spotted the aforementioned group leaving the car park as I arrived because there was a lively group of lads displaying some Whitwickesque style language having clearly had an afternoon not drinking Carlsberg.
But for all you non Bass aficionados out there it is also a Timothy Taylor’s Champion Club establishment (as shown on very smart beermats) and also sells beers you have heard of with the added bonus of being in good nick.
Apparently, this place had a major refurb three years ago and sells good food (so I’m led to believe) and is smart inside with a massive beer garden out the back that had quite a few (it’s the school holidays) kids enjoying themselves with frazzled parents!
It’s also canal-based and that is a huge bonus as boats can moor at the boozer on the Ashby canal whilst there is also caravan and camping available and that looked to be relatively full as well.
There were a well to do couple enjoying a chat in the bar whilst there were a male/female Hi-viz couple also enjoying a pint outside with 10CC’s “Dreadlock Holiday” in the background it was an atmosphere that you could really relax in.
The ever-friendly barmaid was talking about the fact the the canal ends at the Snarestone Tunnel but, with HS2 looming, they are apparently going to extend the canal all the way through to Measham and incorporate a big new Marina there as well.
(all roads/canals lead to Measham!!)
However, she did add the caveat that plans have been in the pipeline for a “Measham Marina” for 21 years and it hasn’t happened as yet!
So, in a nutshell, a pub selling excellent beer with friendly knowledgeable staff set on a canal with overnight camping/caravan facilities as well as food and a huge beer garden to entertain children….
If Carlsberg did pubs then this would be the perfect starting point…
There are people who read this who are non-Bass aficionados ? Grief.

Apparently a couple of northern strongholds are still resisting…I’m contacting lawyers about a possible banning order

Amazingly, we’ve only made it all the way along the Ashby Canal on one occasion, back in 1995! We stopped at Shackerstone and Congerstone, but not at Snarestone! I do remember going through the tunnel, to be greeted by a lot of unhappy fishermen, turning at the terminus and running the gauntlet of the anglers once again, but the timing was wrong for a lunchtime stop at The Globe.

That made me chuckle as I have visions of you performing that turn as it looked tight!!! Maybe HS2 will bring a positive spin off for canal network too…

“therefore ensuring location is central”
Pfft. The UK isn’t THAT small. 🙂
“she confirmed that I had arrived at arguably the prime time of the week for a good pint of Bass.”
I’ll say!
“with a massive beer garden out the back ”
It indeed looks quite large in Streetview.
“It’s also canal-based and that is a huge bonus as boats can moor at the boozer on the Ashby canal whilst there is also caravan and camping available and that looked to be relatively full as well.”
Perfect. You could pull up for the night (or a meal/drink) or even park there for the weekend. What’s not to like? (thumbs up)
“However, she did add the caveat that plans have been in the pipeline for a “Measham Marina” for 21 years and it hasn’t happened as yet!”
Yep. Looking on the map that does appear to be a bit of a pipe dream. (sigh)
But, as it stands, it still looks a pretty inviting place. 🙂
Cheers

The canal syatem in England is great but still so much more to potentially develop…. investment is the key! This boozer is a good one though and clearly using its location well cheers 😎👍🍻

Hugely controversial claim to be the centre of UK- Haltwhistle will take action. First excellent Bass you’ve reported for a while! Ps hard luck to Blues against the mighty Royals last night! Saving yourselves for the league no doubt 😉

Controversy is my middle name 😀 youre right it’s been slim pickings on Bass recently…since we won it in 2011 there has clearly been an edict to get knocked out as early as possible!!!

Ah but you had James McFadden then, though think he was injured that season. Talented player when fit.

Top class player and we also had Barry Ferguson who was possibly our last outstanding midfielder

Forgot you had him. Never reached the heights he promised I thought – something of the Ray Wilkins about him.

I once went to a pub near Loughborough that made a similar claim. Can’t remember exactly, but it might have been called the Seas All Around Us? or summat like that.
