A short break from my tour of central Derby to bring you an unashamed plug for a cricket club in Solihull that is selling booze at good price.
Steve Perryman of Warwickshire fame (not the Spurs defender) spent eight years at Edgbaston before coaching the Bears successfully in the nineties under Bob Woolmer and now coaches the ECB development side, The Unicorns.
Perrers is a top class Brummie and has also taken over the reins at 302 – Solihull Cricket Club B91 2PF along with fellow ex Bear, Phil Oliver; but, of equal importance, he has taken over the reins of the social club!
The web of Birmingham City fans continues by bringing in legendary former gaffer of The Highwood – Dave Hunt – who regularly turfed the bar for the Cheltenham festival, as the man to ramp up the interest levels, then it is in a prime position.
My dad lives walking distance from here and used to go to a weekly quiz but had stopped going due to the price of the drinks and the poor service so Perrers has stepped in like a knight in shining armour.
I popped in on opening day, which was a Sunday (October 7) and was pleased to find it is open longer hours than around half of the new GBG entries this year!
Plans are afoot to revamp it but I had a splendid pint of Worthington Creamflow (your standard Brummie ‘cask’ drink!) at under £3 and with the Carling also priced in the same region then there is no doubt this place will pick up passing trade.
(picture of Worthington Creamflow – not in H&S CC)
It’s also attached to the bowls club and a tennis club so there is a captive market here and I fully expect it, with Dave’s nous and enthusiasm, allied to Perrers’ gregarious nature, to become a rival in the long run to Knowle and Dorridge CC in the social stakes.
“My dad lives walking distance from here”
Gorgeous photo right above that.
“and was pleased to find it is open longer hours than around half of the new GBG entries this year!”
LOL. That wouldn’t be too hard (but well done them).
“It’s also attached to the bowls club and a tennis club so there is a captive market here”
Indeed. You could almost say it’s a social club. (thumbs up)
Cheers

No, just the best of a bad bunch. I would tend to have Guinness in a pub with no real ale or just Doom Bar or Smooth/Creamflow, failing that some sort of Lager.

Fair point. I’m not a Guinness fan at all so would be smoothflow/Doombar or lager for me…
