“See the steeple pine
“The hills as old as time
“Soon to be put to the test
“To be whipped by the winds of the west
“She’ll carry on through it all
“She’s a waterfall”
An absolute Stone Rose classic and on a weekend where Martin’s boys won at a canter along with the red half of the city then I thought it was a good time to celebrate the Stone Roses.
Apparently, the bloke who did all the Roses artwork was a Citeh fan but, some of the band were red and some of the band were blue, so Mani, Ian, John and Reni, I salute your work.
I was about 19 when they were flying high and anybody who wrote Fool’s Gold and I Am The Resurrection is iconic in my eyes. The Madchester Top Of The Pops (when it mattered) alongside the Happy Mondays was memorable but I just get the impression they are possibly more blue than red…
Anyway, talking of football, casual street wear and looking like a bit of a geezer I found a top lad in 303 – The Waterfall DE1 2RU who was happy to pose for a photo!
This is a fantastic old piece of architecture – The Midland Railway Institute Building that mushroomed in Derby around 1892 as a cultural and educational centre for rail workers.
It is now directly opposite Derby train station and one of the boozers that is often overlooked but it’s an absolute monster of a boozer inside. There is a huge main room and then an ‘American Pool Lounge’ where I found my new found pal happy to adopt a “Who are you” pose ahead of Derby’s highly fortuitous victory over Birmingham City yesterday.
It classes itself as a ‘party venue’ and has other rooms to hire and when I strolled in at around 1.30 on a Wednesday, there were quite a few punters eating and drinking.
I think the issue with this place is that it is so cavernous that unless it is packed, then it will always feel relatively empty irrespective of how many punters are in.
(Anyone remember Joel Garner?)
I’m not sure if it was me but, after ordering a tidy half pint of Blue Moon (Doom Bar was available but I don’t have GBG PUB rules so I can indulge…) within 20 minutes around 20 punters had disappeared.
There was just me, SKY Sports and my Blue Moon left to contemplate life until I popped into the pool room at the back for a quick piccy. There are always a couple of geezers in the pool lounge and this place is filling a gap that your GBG/Ale Trail stalwarts don’t reach.
If you want to watch sport in an imposing historic building whilst drinking, then this is the place for you!
It’s huge and needs a lot of punters to constitute an atmosphere but probably the most kid-friendly boozer in this area.
Ian Brown would like it, I am sure!
“An absolute Stone Rose classic”
Indeed. Looks gorgeous.
They need to keep up with the “falling” letters though; since the Streetview in 2017 they’ve lost the second ‘A’ and the ‘W’. 😉
“I found a top lad in 303 – The Waterfall DE1 2RU who was happy to pose for a photo!”
You’re sure that wasn’t Si?
(and the other lad was so shy he’s even hiding his face!) 🙂

Good point.

You rebel you! :
“If you want to watch sport in an imposing historic building whilst drinking, then this is the place for you!”
There’s a venue for everything. 🙂

I am pretty sure it wasn’t Si…only becasue this place is unlikely to trouble the GBG anytime soon! I reckon they are waiting for all the letters to fall off before splashing out on a new sign! I reckon the other bloke was hiding becasue he dind’t want to be seen on camera!
It’s a fantastic building and great to see it being used as a pub…long may that continue!
