It’s the season of goodwill to all so what better way than to reminisce about the joys of Britain’s finest drink.
It’s been a difficult year for the doyen of cask ale with a summer so hot that even Bass began to melt;
but, despite its neglect by brewing behemoth Marston’s/ Molson Coors, it continues to shine when looked after properly and imagine how good it could be if it was actually marketed.
Anyway, I kind of like the fact it’s almost becoming a subversive movement and that Bass is being drunk despite its lack of marketing.
So, that’s the Bass covered with a healthy 32 new boozers I visited this year serving Burton’s premier pint.
From Meriden to Ibstock to Gotham to Lichfield, from World Cup mayhem in Castle Donington to Dead Kennedys dancing in Derby, it’s still going strong in the Midlands
…roll on 2019 with a special mention to The Swan Inn in Milton as arguably Derbyshire’s best pint of the amber nectar.
(blog posts at bottom)
I’d like to thank everyone who has commented on the blog in 2018 as it is hugely appreciated and generates some humorous debate and I’ll endeavour to visit a few more boozers in 2019 (it’s a tough gig but someone’s got to do it…)
The following are all producing some terrific copy and well worth a read…

A great Christmas gift, BeerMat. Wish I’d had that idea. Nice to remember Alan, who loved your blog.

Can’t disagree – and a happy Bassmas to you too 😋🔺
However, in keeping with my curmudgeonly reputation, I must point out that cask Bass comes from the Marston’s brewery in Burton, home of several of Britain’s finest ales. Only the much inferior bottled and canned versions emanate from Samlesbury.

Excellent work Mudgie 👍🎅I shall adjust accordingly …is it Molson Coors or Marston’s?

Marston’s. AB InBev are the brand owners, although I think Molson Coors own Worthington. Confused? You will be!
Ironically, IMV Bass is now a better beer than Marston’s own flagship Pedigree.

It sounds like an episode of Soap!!! Yes I agree bass is generally better than pedigree when both are on offerMy FIG-LX1. On O2.

Argh, I should have known this as I remember seeing a diagram months ago:
Mudgie is correct (I think) in that Marston’s brews Bass, succeeding Coors, who took it over from Interbrew.
Sheesh!

Ugh. Molson Coors. There’s most of your explanation for neglect right there. 😦
“(it’s a tough gig but someone’s got to do it…)”
Not even us lot are going to fall for that! (LOL)
“The following are all producing some terrific copy and well worth a read…”
I’ll keep that handy. Ta.
“I’ll raise a glass to the ultimate #pubman Alan Winfield who sadly left us this year…”
(raises glass)
To the most proper of proper pub men. May the pubs where ‘ere he may be never close.
And a very Merry Christmas to all.
Cheers!

Great post to celebrate Christ – Bass or Bass mass LAF, as well as respected pubman Alan.
My only worry about marketing Bass too heavily is that it might become a victim of it’s own success (I’ll say this quietly but I was thinking ABInbev’s version of Doom beer here).
Merry Christmas

That’s a good point…maybe a major marketing campaign is not needed but how many people under 30 know of it??
