Following Russ’ controversial proposed ban from the comments section after the Brentwood debacle it was time to explore a bit of Derbyshire countryside.
Protracted negotiations from Russ’ lawyers against a strong law firm of Taylor, Hermit, Everitt, Mackay, Curmudgeon, Thurman and co, apparently all members of the Bar (gettit?), ensured a decision was finally reached.
(missing K from pub signage found!)
If Birmingham City could escape defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day of 2019 then Russ would be allowed his football faux pas and not outed as a skiing, baseball and cycling aficionado.
You might wonder just how long I can stretch this line out for (I reckon at least two more blog posts) but the end game is looming…honestly!
However, New Year’s Eve beckoned first and an eight-mile family walk book ended by two boozers in Duffield was as good a way as any to see out 2018.
As The Wickingman and Mappiman know, the lure of a good walk and a pint can’t be bettered whilst Martin often racks up the miles on his fitbit before a quick-fire spoons breakfast and a pint of crafty keg.
Rolling up in Duffield at just before midday meant the opportunity for Mrs BB and two of the ankle biters to pop into a boozer I thought had bitten the dust.
327 – The Kings Head DE56 4EH is situated a couple of doors away from newest kid on the block in Duffield – the Tollgate Brewery Tap House.
It looked as though it might be consigned to the history books but it has clearly had a big refurb and is very much a boozer but with the added bonus of food.
There are two rooms with the big refurb occurring in ‘Reubens’ and I reckon they might just have hit on something as The White Hart is far more food based (post to come), The Town Street Tap is a micro and The Bridge Inn is a 2-1 Marston’s whilst The Pattenmakers Arms is a backstreet local
Apart from NYE though as a family followed us in heading for the ‘Reubens’ part of the pub but were told that it was a food free day apart from a ‘street food’ offering later.
Nonetheless, seeing a pint of Jaipur (Thornbridge) at midday on a non-work day is just too good to miss…
and as it good it was, I may have been a little optimistic opening with that before an eight miler!
The first one out of the traps was remarkably good and there were already handful of other punters in and drinking so the scene was set for what I would imagine was a long New year’s Eve…
Darts, pool…
and big screens showing Michael Smith ahead of his pummelling by RVG in the Darts final (second most watched sport on Sky)
and it is great to see that this place has found a niche on the main street as the most ‘pubby’ offering.
It’s also the closest pub to Duffield Station and, as such, is under the obligation of pub blogging #law367 and must sell good cask ale and be ‘a pub.’
As Russ has found out, these rules are stringent and apart from Dorridge Station (which was given exemption due to the fact Steve Bruce once lived there) all other stations in the Midlands need to sell good beer****
Anyway, suitably lubricated, a walk began whilst the debate raged over Russ’ impending ban…
***not necessarily a true fact
No finer a team of obsessives and pedants you could wish to gather to enforce the rules. Regrettably though, the success of our most recent commission on behalf of the Transport Minister- exercising due diligence on a shipping company – was so successful that we may be unavailable to take on new work till the end of March.
A pint of Jaipur before an 8 mile walk sounds a sensible precaution.

Ha ha 😀 that made me chuckle out loud! A terrific response…yes always a wise move to cushion any potential lactic acid pain…

And, in all seriousness, Apple Cider Vinegar (honest!).

I’m worried about the number of Pedigree clips in the pubs you visit. Never mind Russ’s misdemeanour, you may need to watch out for the ‘lack of Bass’ totting up procedure.

That’s a good spot! I was hoping the addition of Jaipur might mean lack of Bass 🔺 slipped under the radar…not many refurbs = return of 🔺🔺🙄🙄

“Following Russ’ controversial proposed ban from the comments section after the Brentwood debacle”
Crikey. I’d thought with the New Year that would’ve died down. 😉
“a strong law firm of Taylor, Hermit, Everitt, Mackay, Curmudgeon, Thurman and co”
Ahem. My firm is Dewey, Cheatem & Howe. 🙂
“apparently all members of the Bar (gettit?)”
(slow golf clap)
“then Russ would be allowed his football faux pas and not outed as a skiing, baseball and cycling aficionado.”
Tsk, tsk, tsk. In order:
Skiiing; whilst my family indulges, I am the one who spends the day at the bar in the chalet while they’re on the slopes;
Baseball; ok, grant you that 🙂
Cycling; if that refers to replenishing beers in my beer fridge then yes; otherwise, hell no!
“but the end game is looming…honestly!”
Suuuuuure.
“an eight-mile family walk”
Blimey. Me ‘ats off to you and your family. My wife and I regularly do 3-mile walks (though, to be fair, we don’t have a pub at one end).
“the lure of a good walk and a pint can’t be bettered ”
Let me add Paul Bailey to that list:

“Nonetheless, seeing a pint of Jaipur (Thornbridge) at midday on a non-work day is just too good to miss…”
Can’t argue with that; the Pedigree notwithstanding.
“I may have been a little optimistic opening with that before an eight miler!”
Pfft. It’s not even 6%! 🙂
“a walk began whilst the debate raged over Russ’ impending ban…”
I’m sure Mrs BBM stood up for me; I’ve always been a fan of hers. 🙂
Cheers
PS – Um, not wishing to be a pain but… shouldn’t the post be the Kings Head and not the Kings Arms? 😉

Goo lord, where to start? In order;
– skiiing: whilst the family indulges I can be found in the chalet during said times
– baseball: ok, I’ll grant you that
– cycling: unless we’re talking replenishing my beer fridge then, no way!
“but the end game is looming…honestly!”
Suuuuuure.
“and an eight-mile family walk”
Blimey! Me and the missus do a 3-mile walk on occasion (but then again, we don’t have a pub waiting at the other end!).
“Nonetheless, seeing a pint of Jaipur (Thornbridge) at midday on a non-work day is just too good to miss…”
Totally understand; the Pedigree notwithstanding.

Did selling NYE tickets in pubs spell the end of the traditional New Years celebrations – Yes they did!
Looks like you dropped on there with the Thornbridge. Saved you from the Marston’s brews (includes Bass) anyway.

I agree! Don’t understand why you’d charge regulars to go into a boozer when they can go elsewhere for free… Jaipur is excellent 👍

Don’t know whether it’s the same everywhere, but round here NYE has lost it’s appeal. Maybe I’m getting narrow and old minded? Just feels that it’s moved to a ‘party night’ rather than a ‘proper night out’ for the whole community.

It’s been like that for a while pal . Mind you I didn’t go out for about 18 years so still a new concept for me 😉
