Having been pressganged into offering BRAPA a tour of Leicestershire pubs should any of the shires ever reach the GBG, then I thought I should take in some more…just for research purposes I’ll have you know.
That stretch of road between Market Bosworth, Hinckley, Coalville and Nuneaton is as far removed from those towns as you could imagine and has plenty of rural Middle England.
(waterways map – especially for Pete)
The sort of villages that often have pubs in them so loved by Martin with pashminas, Crew Clothing Company and Jack Wills gear along with lots of small dogs.
Even the Leicestershire/Warwickshire borders have had to adapt to survive and a pub, which is one of two in a village of 538 punters, needs to be a destination boozer.
Which, 416 – Hercules Revived CV13 0AG, most definitely is. Apparently this place went bump in 2012 when it was known as The Hercules Inn and given a new moniker and totally revamped into its new guise.
However, it’s got some punk rock credentials as Green Day stopped here on their tour of England in 2017 when the pub opened especially early to get them fish and chips and beer.
Rumours that Martin and Duncan have been posing as members of Green Day ever since to get into those ever so awkward tap houses and their short opening times are, as yet, unconfirmed.
However, Sutton Cheney Wharf (pronounced Cheenee) will attract boat gurus and with Pete confirming there are no drink steer laws on the water, then this is a boozer we could take in our proposed day/week/month on the canals.
It’s got accommodation, a first floor restaurant and a downstairs bar/eating area, which is where I headed to at about 8pm on a Thursday evening.
There was a group preparing to eat upstairs who were drinking by the window and another couple came in with small dogs, crew clothing style jumpers and checked shirts whilst another couple were knocking back the Prosecco.
However, the atmosphere was good, it is working now as opposed to when it was shut and the bar staff were fantastic.
Enthusiastic and helpful they also keep a very good drop of (Church End) What The Fox’s Hat beer that is 3.50 a pint and more than reasonable for a gastro boozer.
It’s a pukka place but it is playing to its market audience and I always maintain an open pub is better than a closed one.
This is the sort of place Mrs BB would love to come to so I may have to pull my finger out and revive her view of my choice of pubs (get it?)
Good beer, friendly staff and I suspect good food. This place knows its market and Sutton Cheney, which is a hotbed of American protest music, has welcomed it with open arms.
Nice one. When all these boozers and gastropubs suddenly get in the Beer Guide in 2027 you’ll probably find you’ve been to more than me, Duncan and Si combined!
Nice part of the world.

I could see this one getting in! One cask option but very well kept…it’s the way forward…

Thanks for a memory. .My dad used to love this pub some 20 or so years ago when it was famous for its 32 oz steaks. Proper scoff.

No way!!!! That’s a great tale…I presume it was more Berni Inn style back in the day??

No it was a proper country pub but there used to be pubs that battled on the size of their steaks.

Fantastic!!! It’s in good hands now and doing well by the look of it. However, missing lots of big steaks!

“just for research purposes I’ll have you know.”
Suuuuuuure. 🙂
“(waterways map – especially for Pete)”
I love how in the lower left it says ‘Stay Away From the Edge’. Will you fall off the map if you don’t? 😉
“so loved by Martin with pashminas”
Phew! For a second there I thought Martin had taken to wearing pashminas himself! 🙂
“given a new moniker and totally revamped into its new guise.”
Using ‘revived’ is actually not that bad of an idea.
“when the pub opened especially early to get them fish and chips and beer.”
Martin and Si aren’t at that level of fame just yet.
“Rumours that Martin and Duncan have been posing as members of Green Day ever since to get into those ever so awkward tap houses and their short opening times are, as yet, unconfirmed.”
LOL! But I’m sure they’re contemplating it!
“with Pete confirming there are drink steer laws on the water”
Sigh. We have that over here as well.
“and another coupled came in with small dogs, crew clothing style jumpers and checked shirts and another couple were knocking back the Prosecco.”
Jeepers.
“and I always maintain an open pub is better than a closed one.”
Agreed. Especially if they have a spot set aside mainly for those who just wish to have a drink. Was the downstairs here like that, with the upstairs being mainly for dining?
“(get it?)”
I think so? 🙂
“This place knows it market”
And, to be honest, that’s the bottom line for what a business needs to do.
Cheers

That was a typo…you actually have drink drive laws on the boats n Canada? Wow!!! Martin, to my knowledge, has yet to buy a pashmina…anything is possible though

Nice map, thanks. It is quite a while since we’ve been along the Ashby Canal but I know we’ve never stopped at Suton Cheney. Looks well worth a visit for next time we’re passing that way.
Interesting set of rules on drinking and boating in Canada. Suffice to say, there are no rules here although you can be charged with being drunk in charge of a boat. As the speed limit is 4 mph and, in general, the canals aren’t much over 5 ft deep it is much less a risk than on the open expanses of water in Canada!

I definitely prefer our rules Pete 🍻 isn’t this the canal that ends at the globe in Snarestone?
