All Hail The Wet Led Local Boozer

As Martin will testify, locals are bad for business in terms of pub blogging.  As exciting as a night in your local boozer might be, I’m not sure you could stretch a blog out of it over a length of time.

However, it is time to herald the wet-led local of which there can’t be too many remaining.

29 – The Swan DE65 6EF is getting its third outing on this blog having previously posted about it in the middle of summer and the depths of winter.

It’s the only pub in the village of Milton, which has no bus service, train station or shop and not a lot of chimney pots either.

However, it is bucking the trend massively as when it was taken over the best part of two years ago the new owners decided to ditch food and it is wet led now and absolutely thriving.

It is a proper two-roomer, which always has punters in and opens from 5pm Mon-Fri and all day on weekends.

No Sky Sports but a proper grass beer garden, Draught Bass is drunk like Carling and lots of punters who travel in from the nearby villages as well as locals mean it is a throwback of the highest order.

Here’s a map to give you an idea of just how few houses there are…

And a bigger one to put it into context for Dave…

I’ve got a host of photos I could use but this Bass one is always a favourite

Swan Bass

and a relatively recent charity bash on a Sunday saw a live Oasis covers band in the car park…

and the atmosphere is top notch.

A local is a boozer I would put within walking distance and this fits the bill, albeit a decent a stroll, but it’s just how you’d imagine a boozer to be.

This has been in the GBG so all the usual suspects will have visited this but it’s been spruced up and is rude health and ticking over nicely with a decent gin selection for Mrs BB and her entourage.

I’d be intrigued to know if any readers have a wet led local in 2019 that can rival this boozer…well worth a visit and not only Bass but other beers are available too!

  1. Kind of an amazing story. Nice to see someone succeed like this. It makes you wonder what they are doing differently than so many other places. Is it the personality of the owners? Staff?

    1. Owners came with good reputation from Newton Solney and a few punters followed…more locals returned and beer is magnificent 🍻
Simple yet effective and the place has been spruced up…more gin friendly and therefore more modern!

Good point. I don’t think any of you lot keep blogging about the same pub day in and day out.

“the new owners decided to ditch food and it is wet led now and absolutely thriving.”

Bit of a gamble but… well done them.

“And a bigger one to put it into context for Dave…”

Blimey. Not a lot of ‘greyed in areas’ nearby for sure.

“and this fits the bill, albeit a decent a stroll, ”

Is this after your recent move?

“with a decent gin selection for Mrs BB and her entourage.”

    Bonus!

    Sigh. Certainly not I, alas.

And with that, my darling wife is home early from class, so a perusal of the blogs of Duncan and Martin will have to wait till tomorrow! 😉

    1. Glad to see you’ve prioritised me Russ 😄 the boys will understand!
It was a short movie so still my local. .does the basics well… comfortable, good beer WiFi, good atmosphere etc and a beer garden.
Just different to most other boozers in close vicinity

I reckon mine, The Jolly Sailor in Macclesfield, could be in with a shout. Another pub where “Draught Bass is drunk like Carling”, and not just by my good self.

It’s always good to see wet led boozers doing well in the current climate. Surprised to see from the map that I’ve been supping not too far from this one in this one. Though with no bus or train service I’m unlikely to end up there myself without risking life and limb dodging cars while trudging the lanes of South Derbyshire.

  4. We’ve a cracking wet led local in my village (Pelsall in Walsall)
Unfortunately only the one ale on mostly (Hobgoblin) it’s a Carling pub that sells by the bucketload. The Banks ‘s is top notch though.
Always busy, with theme nights, singers and Sky /BT sports. Full of characters too.
I was in yesterday morning following remembrance and the place was packed singing along with a singer belting out post was classics.

    1. Sounds perfect 👍 one is more than enough for most places and Carling pubs usually = more fun 😉 what’s the name of this boozer to add to my ever growing list…what a great finish in the T20 by the way 👏👏
