No Old Gold Tears In Calf Heath

You can’t blame me…it was Monday, the day after the afternoon before and I was passing through a Wolverhampton suburb so I thought I’d check it out.

I’m not one to gloat as regular readers will know but there was a slim chance I just might bump into Paul WME to offer my disingenuous sincere commiserations after Wolves had crashed out of the FA Cup at the semi-final stage.

Not once had it crossed my mind to mention that Birmingham City future captain fan Troy Deeney’s late equaliser and Gerry Deulofeu’s extra time winner, which sealed an FA Cup classic for Watford, ensured Birmingham are still the only club in the West Midlands to have won a major trophy this century.

If I did mention that Birmingham are still the only club in the West Midlands to have won a major trophy this century then I would be accused of gloating and no one likes to read about the successes of one club, failure is much more fun to read about.

So, with all that in mind, I approached my first pub in almost 400 boozers with a WV postcode with some delight trepidation, as I wondered if there would be a sea of old gold bunting strewn across the floor and lots of punters dancing to ‘Woolly Bully’ to cope with the angst of defeat.

With my regional tones I don’t usually make a point of mentioning other dialects but there is a big difference between Brummie accents and those of punters from the Black Country.

(NO karaoke – serious singers only!)

This was clear as day when I was in Sainsbury’s post pub and I walked past the bakery and a mum was talking about “Chocurlut browernies” to her lad and that, apart from Barry from Auf Wiedersehen Pet, is the perfect example of Black Country speak.

(The only Carling Cup Birmingham are winning this year…)

Anyway, back to the boozer in question and 380 – Dog & Partridge WV10 7DW is tucked away in the wonderfully named village of Calf Heath on a road known, imaginatively, as Straight Mile.

A Monday at 3.30 isn’t prime time but I needn’t have worried about any FA Cup hangover in this place as it was an absolute gem.

(That’s a straight mile…)

The game had definitely been shown yesterday as they have live sports on covering all bases but, apart from some birthday balloons still on a table, all was calm.

(Beers you’ve heard of)

The landlady was friendly and attentive and served up a reasonable half of Abbott Ale (Greene King) although I noticed a few more options round the corner…

The conversation was classic pub chat as an old girl was laying into rip off parking charges…

and a bloke, who had good listening skills, was nodding along.

Another conversation was flowing about the merits of Coventry and how it was in Warwickshire really and not the West Midlands; whilst this suburb is closer to Cannock than Wolves, it had a warmth about it you often get in Black Country homely boozers.

Lots of knick knacks around, clearly well-kept and although it was open plan it was split level, so had the feeling of separate rooms.

A great pub that is tucked away underneath the M6 and has the feel of a canalside country boozer serving pub grub as opposed to gastro boozer.

Four ales on might be a little optimistic but, no doubt when Paul WME finally arrives with his merry band of men to celebrate Wolves reaching an FA Cup Final, they will drink the place dry…

Funny you should say that – having looked on the map, the pub in less than 100 yards away from the route of the (now derelict) Hatheron Canal. We’ve passed by Calf Heath on many occasions without knowing that there is a pub not too far away! We won’t be back that way this year (the boat has a new mooring on the Oxford Canal), but I hope I remember it when we do cruise along the Staffs & Worcs Canal again.

  2. I won’t rise to the football bait as I get the feeling Wolves supporters are in a minority among the Beermat readership and I have just about recovered from the Wembley disappointment! As Pete says, the Dog and Partridge was indeed a canal pub and with a bit of a rummage just the other side of the M6 you can follow the former Hatherton branch towards Cannock. I don’t know about drinking the palce dry – it could be many years before Wolves get the remotest sniff of another FA Cup final – but I did enjoy my visit to Calf Heath a couple of years ago… http://wmexplorer.blogspot.com/2017/07/waterways-walks-hatherton-canal.html

      1. I too like the city of Wolves but will stop at nothing to get an angle for a blog post!!!! I’ve ordered my tickets already for the grand opening…third in line behind Steve Bull and George Berry.

      2. The love for Wolverhampton shining through is a comfort at this time of footballing pain! Be interesting to see how much of a visitor attraction the Wetherspoons Museum turns out to be, although it will be good to see more of the former Co-op building brought back into proper use. Cheers, Paul

    1. Good man. I knew you’d take it in the spirit it was intended…I reckon it is nigh on impossible to get a WV postcode boozer past you mate. You’ll be winning a trophy in the next five years with that squad….I’ll have a read of your post and see if there’s many changes occurred in two years…

      1. I’ve done more than my fair share of WV postcode pubs Beermat it’s true, but there are still plenty that have eluded me… particularly the rural WV15 and WV16 ones near Bridgnorth.
Dog & Partridge doesn’t seem to have changed much – I even seem to recognise the bloke in your photo standing at the bar, I’m sure he congratulated me on my choice of scratchings!
As for Wolves who knows what the future might be if the Chinese investment keeps coming, although I fear that Nuno and some of the star players could attract the attention of Europe’s elite before too long. All the best, Paul

  4. “after Wolves had crashed out of the FA Cup at the semi-final stage.”

    Ouch. 😉

“ensured Birmingham are still the only club in the West Midlands to have won a major trophy this century.”

    Double ouch!

“failure is much more fun to read about.”

That’s bordering on deep thought; or a succinct comment on society. 😉

“and those of punters from the Black Country.”

    Jamaica? 😉

“(The only Carling Cup Birmingham are winning this year…)”

With regards to the photo, can’t say I’m thrilled to see Carling extolling that they come from Burton-on-Trent.

    “(That’s a straight mile…)”

We’ve got loads of those over here in Canada; particularly in the prairies. 🙂

“as an old girl was laying into rip off parking charges…”

Sadly, we have loads of that over here as well (the parking charges, not so much old girls complaining about such).

    “(scissors in the condiments bowl)”

I’m guessing to help with opening them?

“and has the feel of a canalside country boozer serving pub grub as opposed to gastro boozer.”

I lean towards the former as opposed to the latter myself.

“they will drink the place dry…”

Well… they will have worked up quite a thirst by that time in the distant future. 🙂

    Cheers

    1. Black country refers to Wolverhampton and surrounding regions due to industrial revolution back in the day and has stayed as terminology ever since…. Birmingham won the Carling cup in 2011 (League Cup) now known as the Caraboa Cup and won by Manchester City this year….Paul will be parched by the time that happens 😉
